Beware of "Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen" Facilities
Hyperbaric treatment at minimally elevated chamber pressures (often called "mild hyperbaric oxygen") is unproven. These treatments—typically delivered at pressures lower than 1.5 ATA with breathing gas mixes well below 95% oxygen—have become widely available in wellness centers and health spas that are not medical facilities.
These facilities are generally not physician-prescribed or supervised, often operate without proper adherence to fire safety and chamber construction standards (ASME-PVHO-1 and NFPA 99), and may put clients at risk for serious injury. They lack the clinical oversight and proven protocols that make hyperbaric oxygen therapy effective.
Green Mountain Hyperbaric operates ASME/NFPA-certified chambers under direct physician supervision, delivering scientifically proven treatments at therapeutic pressures with 100% medical-grade oxygen.

How HBOT Works
During hyperbaric oxygen therapy, you breathe 100% pure oxygen inside a pressurized chamber at 2-3 times normal atmospheric pressure. This allows your lungs to gather significantly more oxygen than breathing pure oxygen at normal air pressure.
Your blood carries this extra oxygen throughout your body, stimulating the release of growth factors which promote healing. The increased oxygen concentration helps fight bacteria and triggers your body's repair processes.
HBOT has been shown to mobilize stem cells from the bone marrow into the bloodstream. Studies demonstrate that a single hyperbaric treatment can double the number of circulating stem cells, and a full course of treatments can increase stem cell mobilization by up to eight-fold. These stem cells travel to areas of injury and contribute to tissue repair and regeneration, making HBOT a powerful catalyst for your body's own regenerative capacity.
Accelerated Healing
Hyperbaric oxygen dramatically increases tissue oxygenation, speeding up your body's natural healing process.
Fighting Infection
High oxygen levels enhance your immune system's ability to fight bacteria and reduce inflammation.
Stem Cell Mobilization
HBOT mobilizes stem cells from bone marrow into the bloodstream—up to eight-fold over a full course of treatments—accelerating tissue repair and regeneration.
Reduced Recovery Time
Many patients experience faster recovery compared to traditional treatments alone.

UHMS-Approved Indications
The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) is the primary source of scientific information for diving and hyperbaric medicine worldwide. The following conditions are approved indications for hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
Definition of Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO₂) Therapy
Hyperbaric oxygen is a medical procedure requiring a physician's prescription and oversight. Patients are placed within a hard-sided hyperbaric chamber at a pressure of not less than 2.0 ATA (atmospheres absolute) while breathing physician-prescribed medical grade oxygen (>99.0% purity) for typically 90-120 minutes per treatment. Scientifically supported treatments are usually delivered at pressures between 1.9 to 3.0 ATA.

View Emerging ApplicationsWho Can Benefit from Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is FDA-approved for many medical conditions. Every year, scientific studies are published proving HBOT's benefits for additional conditions, and insurance companies continue to expand reimbursable indications.
75%
Decrease in Amputations
Per the New England Journal of Medicine, there has been a 75% decrease in amputations over the past few years due to treating diabetic wounds with hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
Always seek the advice of a physician or other qualified health provider with any questions regarding a medical condition. Off-label treatments are evaluated on a case-by-case basis and require physician approval.
Emerging Applications
In addition to approved indications, we consider off-label hyperbaric oxygen therapy on a case-by-case basis for conditions showing promising research results. Consult with our medical team to discuss whether HBOT may be appropriate for your condition.
Long COVID (Post-COVID Syndrome)
Emerging research shows promising results for patients experiencing prolonged effects of COVID-19 infection
How HBOT May Help
Long COVID patients often experience debilitating fatigue linked to muscles' inability to efficiently extract and utilize oxygen. Think of your muscles as engines sputtering, struggling to get the fuel they need—HBOT aims to directly address this oxygen utilization impairment.
- Restores oxygen to oxygen-starved tissues
- Reduces oxidative stress and chronic inflammation
- Improves mitochondrial activity
- Decreases production of inflammatory cytokines
- Increases mobilization of hematopoietic stem cells
Research Highlights
Tel Aviv University Study: A randomized, placebo-controlled trial of 73 Long COVID patients showed positive changes in attention, sleep quality, pain symptoms, and energy levels—with improvements persisting one year after treatment concluded.
Cardiac Benefits: Research demonstrated significant reduction in heart strain (global longitudinal strain) in patients who received HBOT treatment.
Fatigue & Cognition: A study of 10 patients showed statistically significant improvement in fatigue and cognitive function after just 10 HBOT treatments.
Current Status: HBOT for Long COVID remains an experimental therapy and is not currently covered by insurance. Research is ongoing to determine optimal treatment protocols and which patients may benefit most. Contact us for a consultation to discuss whether HBOT may be appropriate for your Long COVID symptoms.
